Service Quality

Our service quality is assessed by a number of independent authorities and you can find out more about this in our section on how we are performing.

Services in our buildings

Our Facilities team provides a range of services in our buildings, including catering, cleaning, portering and transport, switchboard, chilled foods, food hygiene, hotel services, linen and laundry, waste management, security, gardening, window cleaning and kitchen cleaning.

The team work hard to raise standards and are currently working with the following programmes:

    • Working with the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) to plan and implement the Patient Environment Action Team (PEAT) annual inspection programme.

    • Working with colleagues in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire to plan and implement an annual External Cleanliness Verification inspection programme.

    • Co-ordinating the Food Hygiene inspection programme and providing catering services in line with the Better Hospital Foods initiative.

    • Monitoring our performance to Healthcare Standards as assessed by the Care Quality Commission.

    Managing Medicines

Our pharmacy department supervises the prescribing of drugs to our patients. The team evaluates new drugs and advises on how best to use them, monitor medicines prescribed outside normal dosages or where their use is not well-established and carries out financial analysis of drug prescribing, to ensure efficiency. To find out more about medicines, click on Leicestershire Medicines Formulary.

    When will you see us

Our pharmacists do attend ward rounds to advise the care team on the most appropriate medication but also review and note patient records. They can provide information to patients and carers and are available for one-to-ones meetings with patients to discuss their medication: the reason it has been prescribed, possible side-effects, and the likely duration of treatment. The pharmacy team also runs a 24-hour service for mental health inpatients.

    Being smoke-free

Because health is our business, we try to promote healthy habits and deter people from doing things that could do them harm. Smoking is the single biggest cause of illness and death. Smoking kills more than 120,000 people in the UK each year.

This is why we banned smoking from all our sites in January 2007 - in line with the national target cited in the government White Paper 'Choosing Health'. Although some of our long-term inpatients are exempt from the ban, this arrangement is made on a case-by-case basis and smoking breaks take place in at a specified place, at an agreed time.

To find out more about our smoke-free policy, read the LPT Smoke-Free policy or read the NHS Smoke Free web pages.

    Want to kick the habit?

"Smoking actually worsens stress, anxiety and sleep disorders" says Louise Ross of STOP, Leicester's stop-smoking service. "People who are doing their best to cope with life will find that they feel better in many different ways when they give up smoking."

STOP offers support and nicotine replacement therapy to anybody who asks for it. For more information on how to stop smoking, go to the STOP website or call 0116 295 4141 or, for the County and Rutland team, call 0845 045 2828.
