Forensic Mental Health Services

What Does Our Service Do?

Our forensic service provides a community and inpatient service to adult men and women who pose a risk of harm to others in the context of their mental disorder. We promote and demonstrate safe, sound and supportive practice based on comprehensive clinical and social risk assessment and management whilst promoting protection of the public. Whenever possible service users’ mental health needs will be met by local services and should only be accepted by Forensic services if the complexity and / or severity of their therapeutic needs and risk necessitate this.

The Forensic Mental Health Service delivers care to the whole of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

Inpatient care - Phoenix Ward

Phoenix Ward, in The Herschel Prins Centre, is a low-secure residential unit for male forensic patients consisting of a 12-bedded male ward. We also have access to five acute inpatient beds on Watermead Ward (Bradgate Mental Health Unit) which community patients can access at times of crisis or relapse.

In the community

Our community forensic mental health service has more than 100 community-based patients living in the catchment area.

How Does Our Service Work?

The forensic mental health service team is a multi-disciplinary team and consists of consultant psychiatrists,  nurses, (inpatient and community psychiatric nurses)  social workers, psychologists, and  occupational therapists.

The teams specialise in balancing mental health needs and overall quality of life with consideration of issues around risk assessment and risk management. Because there is an element of risk with every patient we see, you can expect that you will not be judged for this and that professionals working with you will focus on trying to understand why these things have happened in order to help you overcome your particular difficulties. The forensic mental health service will be highly supportive with an emphasis on therapeutic relationships and orientated towards individual needs.

We aim to improve the patient’s quality of life by meeting their clinical, social, spiritual and cultural needs in the unit and community and will create a nurturing therapeutic environment whereby patients will contribute to their own and other’s progress.  The team will deliver interventions which preserve autonomy, protect individual rights, are culturally sensitive and assist empowerment where risk assessment allows.

The team uses a recovery based approach to increase collaborative working with our patients. The inpatient service is implementing an outcomes based approach to patient care called My Shared Pathway which aims to improve the quality of the patient experience by working in partnership with patients and ultimately reduce overall length of stay in hospital. Service users will be treated in the appropriate environment according to their needs.  Care will be provided in the least restrictive environment whilst assessing and reducing risk.

How Can You Access Our Service?

To access our service a referral should be made to the referral panel (which meets weekly) by consultants psychiatrist within the Trust and/or Probation service or Criminal Justice
