What Does Our Service Do?

Heather Ward is part of the Bradgate Mental Health Unit on the Glenfield Hospital site in Leicester. The 18-bedded female ward provides care for women who have acute mental health needs. We aim to promote recovery and provide care sensitive to the needs of women.

How Does Our Service Work?

On admission you will be given your own ensuite bedroom, information leaflets and orientated to the ward. You will be allocated a medical consultant in charge of your care, a named nurse and associate nurse. You will undertake a full assessment of your needs mentally, physically, socially and a plan of care will be put in place with you, including positive risk management, which will be reviewed daily. You are encouraged to maintain contact with friends and family and that they are, if you wish, to be included in your care. From the onset of admission we will be working towards your recovery and subsequent discharge to make the process as short and undisruptive as possible.

Care is provided by a multidisciplinary team including doctors, nurses and other professionals A full time occupational therapist is based on the ward from Monday to Friday and a therapeutic liaison worker is on duty every day to enable activities, groups and therapeutic interventions to take place.

Transfer between wards

Although you might have been admitted to one ward it might be necessary to move your care to a different ward, to accommodate new admissions. This would happen only after we have looked at all options. You will still receive the same high standard of care and your care plan and information will follow you.

Smoke-free Trust

The Trust became smoke free in October 2016 and promotes nicotine replacement therapy products that are free from our pharmacy. The ward will allow the use of disposable e-cigarettes that can be purchased from a vending machine within the unit. E-cigarettes may only be used within the ward gardens and not within the wards. We cannot recharge e-cigarettes and will only allow the use of the e-cigarette from the vending machine.
