What Does Our Service Do?

Griffin Ward is our specialist psychiatric intensive care service for women aged from 18 with complex and urgent mental health needs who pose a risk of harm to themself or to others.  The six-bedroomed ward is part of the Herschel Prins Centre, on the Glenfield Hospital site and is close to the Belvoir Unit where we provide intensive psychiatric care for men.

The ward provides a high standard of accommodation. Patients have their own bedroom and en-suite bathroom offering maximum privacy. The ward also provides spacious lounges, therapy rooms, occupational therapy kitchen and access to a gym, IT suite, laundry facilities and quiet room. The relaxing garden can also be enjoyed under staff supervision.

How Does Our Service Work?

The unit has a multi-disciplinary team of professionals including nurses, occupational therapy, doctors, and psychology and support workers to ensure the patient's physical health, wellbeing and social care needs are all met. The team provides

intensive care in a structured environment to help with the recovery process. All patients are given a named nurse who works with them to complete a full assessment of your needs and develop an individual treatment plan  designed to support their recovery until they are well enough to go home or return to to one of our general psychiatry wards at the Bradgate Unit.

Protected meal times: To support healthy lifestyles, Griffin Ward operates a protected mealtimes policy. Patients are offered a varied choice of nutritious meals that take into account dietary and cultural needs.
