What Does Our Service Do?

The Department of Medical Psychology is contracted by University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL). Staffed by clinical and consulting psychologists, it assesses and treats psychological distress that is arising from or contributing to medical conditions or procedures. We aim to help people to reduce the negative consequences of their ill health and improve their coping strategies. The department works with individuals, couples and groups as appropriate. We aim to provide a high quality service that is responsive to the individual needs of service users, their families and carers. We also improve psychological knowledge and skills through consultancy, teaching, supervision, staff support and collaborative research and audit.

Problems that respond well to psychological intervention include distress that is interfering with treatment (needle phobia for example) or recovery (eg depression following a heart attack) and poor compliance with medical treatment (eg insulin adhernce in diabetes). We also work with patients who need help managing their symptoms (eg pain management) and those who are finding it hard to come to terms with traumatic experiences, their diagnosis, treatment regime or the limitations imposed by their physical condition.

The department offers several groups such as for pateints with pelvic pain, cardiac problems, irritabl bowel disease and weight management).

How Does Our Service Work?

Our service is mainly delivered in out-patient and in-patient bases on the University Hospitals of Leicester sites although a small number of people might be seen in other places. Patients will be assessed to determine whether the department can help them. Most patients then have to go on a post-assessment waiting list and will be contacted when a therapy slot becomes free. Some patients will be offered the opportunity to attend a group for people with problems similar to their own but most patients are seen for individual therapy at our bases at the Leicester General Hospital or the Leicester Royal Infirmary.
