Clinical psychologists are an integral part of the multi-disciplinary team in the adult mental health rehabilitation service. Anyone admitted to the units will have the opportunity to be referred for psychological input.

Clinical psychologists are trained to have an in-depth understanding of how people’s relationships, situations and backgrounds influence their behaviour, thoughts and feelings.

Clinical psychologists work with people whose life experiences or current situation causes them discontent and distress and help people through ‘talking therapies’, that may be on a one-to-one basis or in a group.

Clinical psychologists may also undertake assessments of people’s memory and thinking abilities (cognitive functioning) and help provide strategies when difficulties are identified. In addition, clinical psychologists can offer advice support and guidance to help carers cope with emotional and behavioural difficulties that their relative or partner may be experiencing, and sometimes family or couple work may be undertaken.

Clinical psychologists also provide support for staff, including training in psychological approaches, supervision and advice.
