Neuropsychology Service

What Does Our Service Do?

The core purpose of Clinical Neuropsychology is to understand and explain the cognitive, behavioural, emotional and wider social consequences arising from brain injury and/or dysfunction and to contribute to the processes of recovery, rehabilitation, management and adjustment. The department is committed to providing a high quality and effective assessment, intervention and rehabilitation service that is responsive to the individual needs of service users, their families and carers and to the dissemination of neuropsychological knowledge and skills through consultancy, teaching, supervision, staff support, research and professional writing.

How Does Our Service Work?

Our service is mainly delivered in out-patient and in-patient bases at the Leicester General Hospital (e.g. the Core Brain Injury Unit and the Younger Disabled Unit) although some people may be seen in other places, including their own homes.

Clinical neuropsychological assessment is a highly complex process.  A typical outpatient assessment will involve clinical interviews and psychometric assessment. Following this the tests are scored and results interpreted before a report is prepared and fedback to the patient and their referrer.  Sometimes further intervention/treatment or rehabilitative activities are recommended.  The department also offers support and advice for families and carers as people with acquired neurological difficulties and brain injuries often require a high degree of support from families and other carers.

There are five clinical and /or neuropsychologists working in our service. We also have a number of trainee clinical psychologists on placement at any time as well as honorary staff.
